Ripley

Ripley St Thomas : Ripley Hospital was built by J. Cunningham at the expense of Julia Ripley, it was originally an orphanage but now some of its buildings are used by the school of Ripley St Thomas. Altogether there were 300 people in the orphanage 2 sides, one for girls and one for boys. The work of the Hospital continued until the outbreak of World War II in 1939, when the building was requisitioned by the army. The pupils then moved out to Capernwray Hall. They expected to return at the end of the War, but the government requisitioned Ripley for another three years for use as an emergency Teachers’ Training College. By then, it was realised that the need for an orphanage wasn’t required and they were happily settled in Capernway Hall.

Both Howarts and Ripley School have a four house system, Ripley’s are names after cities: Blackburn, Chester, Durham, York and Hogwarts’ are: Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Slytherin and Hufflepuff.

Hogwarts Houses: There are four Hogwarts houses each named after one of the four school founders: Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw and Salazar Slytherin.

  • Gryffindor’s colours are red and gold and their emblem is the lion. Gryffindors value bravery.
  • Hufflepuff’s colours are yellow and black, and their emblem is the badger. Hufflepuffs are considered hard working and loyal, but perhaps not the brightest.
  • Ravenclaw’s colours are blue and bronze (silver in the films) their emblem is the eagle/raven. Ravenclaws value intelligence and knowledge.
  • Slytherin’s colours are green and silver, their emblem is the snake. Slytherins most value ambition and cunning.

The students houses are decided when they first arrive at Hogwarts during the sorting ceremony. The sorting hat, which is an enchanted hat that once belonged to Godric Gryffindor, is placed each student’s head and the hat decides what house they are most suited to. The four houses have their own dormitories and common rooms and have classes together. They compete against each other and have points awarded for things they have done well or deducted for bad behaviour. They also compete in a sport called quidditch which is played on broomsticks, the aim of the game is to get as many points and to win. Usually the team successful at catching the golden snitch will win the game, it can get very competitive.

If you haven’t already found out what house you would be sorted into you can find out here.
