Old Apothecary : This building was built as a Dispensary providing health care for the poor. It was built by public subscription in 1785 the first purpose built dispensary in the area, the dispensary was previously located in the home of Dr Campbell also on Castle hill, this building has since been demolished. This building remained the site of the town’s dispensary until 1833. Dr Campbell wished to “furnish the sick and poor with advice and medicine”. Originally there was a plaque over the doorway of the Good Samaritan. This was later removed and placed above the entrance of the Royal Lancaster Infirmary on Ashton Road.
Apothecaries sold medicines and gave medical advice in much the same way as a pharmacist might do today.
Slug & Jiggers Apothecary, Diagon Alley : The Apothecary sells scales, potions and potion ingredients. The shop is quite fascinating despite its very bad smell (a mixture of bad eggs and rotten cabbage).[PS Ch.5] The inside includes barrels of slimy stuff on the floor, jars of herbs, dried roots and bright powders on the shelves, and bundles of feathers, strings of fangs and snarled claws hanging from the ceiling.[PS Ch.5] Harry regularly buys ingredients, as well as his scales, from the Apothecary.
Some of the ingredients available are silver unicorn horns (for twenty-one Galleons each), glittery-black beetle eyes (five Knuts a scoop), and Dragon liver (seventeen Sickles an ounce).
